Designing with the IKEA Book Case

July 22, 2016 By stylishrevamp 2 Comments

Last year I shared my IKEA Billy Book Case hack, which you can read about here.

StylishRevamp's IKEA Billy Book Case Hack

I am so happy with the way this piece turned out.  So much so, that I would like to do a similar version of it in my sitting room off the master bedroom. At the moment, I have a small but deep armoire that holds my television set and two club chairs in my sitting room.  This is where I normally hang out when I want to watch my mindless reality tv shows that pretty much annoy the males in this household.  It is a cozy little spot but I would like to give it a revamp.  So my hubs said once I come up with a design, he will work on it.

IKEA Billy Bookcase

Designing with the IKEA Bookcase open up many decorating possibilities.

There are so many great IKEA Book Case Hacks out there, so I thought I would share a few here today that might work in my sitting room.

http://www.averystreetdesign.com/2015/06/diy-summer-school-ikea-hack-built-in.html

I love this design by AveryStreetDesign.com. You can click on the link for a complete tutorial. I really like the solid doors on the bottom with the glass front doors on the top. Fabulous! I would have to rework the top a bit to accommodate a small television.  I could leave a set of the glass door off in the center or leave the entire top shelves open.  Also, check out the lighting! I love this look from top to bottom!

Memorabledecor.com

I found this Billy Book Case hack on Memorabledecor.com. I like the mix of the open and closed shelving on this Ikea hack.  I also like how the spacing of the shelves are different on the center book-case.  It adds a different dimension to the entire unit.  I think this would work well in my sitting room.

Lastly, I am sharing a Billy Book Case Hack from Southern Revivals.

http://www.southernrevivals.com/2016/02/office-makeover-reveal-ikea-hack-built-billy-bookcases.html

Yet another favorite of mine! I like the mix of the large and smaller book cases and the large center opening. The options are limitless, that’s why I am a huge fan of all the book cases and shelves at IKEA.  You can easily customize them for a more personal taste.  I cannot wait to get started on this… I need to make a final decision and soon!

Until Next Time,

My Scores at the Thrift Store

July 18, 2016 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

This summer is flying by much too quickly. In fact, I was almost in tears today when I saw the back to school supplies out at the local drug store. Really, can we not just enjoy the month of July before we have to prep for school? #dreadingit

We just got back from a vacation with my 4 brothers and their families and it was the best! I am so sad that it is over.  I cannot even put into words how great this beach trip was for all of us!  I am happy that my boys were able to spend time with my side of the family.  I hope we can do it again next year!

I was actually able to hit up a few thrift/antique stores and a Goodwill while on vacation.  I picked up a few fun things for the Gman for his birthday in August.  I will share those later.

Today has been a day of getting back on track after almost a month of traveling. I went to the gym this morning and I treated myself to some thrift shopping afterwards.  I scored big today, for me anyway!

My scores at the Thrift Store

My thrifting scores

I am always on the hunt for white dishes and serving ware. Today I picked up two large pieces that were originally from Potterybarn. I scored a large serving bowl and a large platter.

Potterybarn Serving ware from the Thrift Shop

I also found a white planter for my little Olive Tree.  I have always wanted an Olive Tree.  I am not sure how long this one is going to last.  He was looking a little droopy when we got home from the beach.

I also scored two corning ware bowls that are range top, oven and microwave safe.  These bowls are so convenient for the day to day meals and snacks. I think I now have a total of 6 of these bowls that I have picked up over time.

Lastly, I am sharing another cloche.  When I first saw it, I thought it would look good on the book case in my home office.  It was another thing that I walked by and thought, if it is still there when I am done searching the rest of the  shop, I will pick it up.  It was there and it was 50% off…I spent  a whopping $2 on it.

my $2 thrift shop cloche

I keep adding little bits to my bookcase.  I need to post another update on the styling of it.  I keep the base objects the same and just add or rearrange the rest.  It is hands down my favorite DIY that my husband and I have done together.

Well, that is all for today.  I hope you have enjoyed a glimpse into my thrifting adventures.

Until Next Time,

The House by the Sea

July 5, 2016 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

Typically I post about DIY, Thrift Shopping and Home Decor but today I wanted to share a bit about our vacation in Massachusetts at the House by the Sea.  I fell in love with this Historic home and its location…right on Cape Cod Bay.

The home is over a hundred years old but has been completely redone, still kept all of the long ago charm but with all the modern conveniences of today. It was a perfect family getaway.

The home was on a bluff that overlooked the surf and sand. To get to the beach below you had to make your way down this long staircase.

135 steps to the beach.

Much easier heading down but good exercise coming back up.  I have to say I was shocked at how cold the water is in Massachusetts.  I guess I just forgot how cold it can be, Gman was much braver than the rest of us when it came to the water!

On our first day there, we just hung out at the house and relaxed after the long travel day.

Night time on the Cape

We drove into Provincetown for lunch and to do some shopping the next day.  I bought two small whales that I will share in a later post.  I picked them up for my bookshelves in the sunroom.

Side Street in Provincetown

We have been to Provincetown twice before.  I love wandering through all the shops and stopping for lunch here.  It is such a pretty little town.

Provincetown Ma(Provincetown)

We stopped by this little lobster shop near the house and picked up lobster for dinner one night.

The Lobster Pound

Isn’t this the cutest little place ever? I found the entire Cape area just charming.  I loved everything about it.

Lobster Dinner

After we picked up the lobster from The Lobster Pound, we had dinner back at the house on the screened in porch.

The forecast was calling for rain the next day but I really wanted to take the ferry over to Nantucket.  I am so glad we did; I would have loved to spend more time there.  I am thinking about booking a trip to Nantucket for the Winter Stroll In December. I am a huge Elin Hilderbrand and Nancy Thayer fan. I read their new novels every summer.  So I was happy to see some of the places on Nantucket that I have read about especially the ones mentioned by Hilderbrand (I was reading her new novel, Here’s to Us while we were on vacation).

The Chicken Box in Nantucket

All Elin Hilderband fans will recognize this…The Chicken Box!

Nantucket's The Chicken Box

No, we didn’t go in but we were right next door having pizza at Sophie T’s Pizza which Hilderbrand mentioned in her latest novel.  I didn’t get to that part of the book until after I had been there!

I would love to live on Nantucket once all the boys are finished with school.  One can dream!  It is just so pretty and charming.  I love everything about Nantucket.

Outside the Nantucket Lifesaving Museum

I took this photo right outside the Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum.  It was so pretty. I would have liked to had time to see the Whaling Museum and go on a guided tour of Nantucket but we just ran out of time.

When we were having an outdoor dinner at Nantucket Prime, the fog started rolling in over the streets.  It was kind of eerie but pretty all at the same time.  The manager at the restaurant told me we were able to see something that was actually kind of rare.  He said the fog usually only comes in in the morning.

Here is a picture of the fog  just starting to come in when we were strolling the streets.

Fog Rolling in on Nantucket

We took the 9:20 ferry back to Hyannis.

Returning from Nantucet on the Ferry

On Thursday we went out on a boat to do some whale watching.  To me, it was absolutely magical. I didn’t take any pictures of the whales.  I wanted to be able to just enjoy watching them and not worry about trying to capture them on camera.  We saw humpback whales. We also saw whales while they were sleeping which was really cool.  If you ever get the chance to go on a whale watching trip, you must do it.  It’s hard for me to describe but I was just amazed and kept thinking I cannot believe these creatures are real.  It was beautiful.  We had gone many years ago in Maine but this time around on the Cape we saw so many whales and it seems like they were much closer to our boat.

Humpback Whales off of Cape Cod Bay

Here is a picture that my son’s girlfriend took of two humpback whales diving under. This day was a favorite for all of us!

Heading out for Whale Watching(We saw this while heading to and from whale watching)

The rest of the trip we spent at the beach, relaxing at the house and playing cards at night.

I was sad to leave…I throughly enjoyed this trip and hanging out with my guys!  Hope you enjoyed this look into our vacation!

2016 Outdoor Home Tour

June 25, 2016 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

I thought since we have had some great weather recently, I would share a quick outdoor tour of our home.  The Spring weather earlier this year has really helped my yard and plants. I will admit outdoor work is not really my thing but I have gotten into it a bit more this year.

Outdoor Home Tour 2016

I think my favorite part of our yard is all the little pathways.

Paver walkway to the front door (Paver walkway to the front door)

Landscaping the pool area

This one is a bit more difficult to see, but it is a flagstone walkway meandering through the pool area to the side of the house.  This is my favorite spot. I like that the path is surrounded by a stacked stone wall, Vinca, skip laurels, Japanese Maple Tree, and the yellow climbing roses.

FlagStone Pathway and outdoor Fireplace

Back Patio Area

(Paver walkway and patio leading to the back of the house)

Our back patio is enclosed with a stone wall and  has a step down area with an outdoor fireplace. It feels like an outdoor room. This photo is not recent but I love how the fireplace looks all decorated. At the moment, I have a crew outside replacing some damaged wood pieces on our deck and trim.  I will share an updated photo in a later post.

Decorating and outdoor fireplace with fresh clipping in a planter and a fresh cut wreath.

I remember many years ago my parents were here and we built a big fire in the fireplace. My mom was a bit panicked but laughing so hard because I built that big fire using junk that my husband had in the garage that should have been trashed many years beforehand. (Mainly it was scrap wood and boxes.)  Anyway, he never missed any of that stuff I cleaned out of the garage.  It will be interesting to see if he reads this post! Yikes!

My potted herb garden, it’s small but it works for me.

Concrete pots on the front porch

This is one of my concrete pots that I shared here on  Thrift Shop Thursday. I have two of them and they flank the front entrance on our porch.  I bought the plants at Kmart. $11 that’s it and they are doing great.  I saw the same thing at a local nursery for $36.

Landscaping around the pool and pergola

Our pergola..my husband came up with this idea.  Did we need it? No, but we love it! Even though it is completely open, it feels like a room out by the pool.  The plants are finally starting to fill in nicely.  Love, Love, love it!

This is the view of the pergola from the back of the house.

Yellow Climbing Roses on the pergola

Our yellow roses are finally starting to make their way up the pergola and down the fence line.  I am really liking the pops of yellow in our yard.

I hope you enjoyed this little glimpse into our outdoor living space.  It is always a work in progress but I finally feel like it is coming together.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of my WV readers, be safe!

To Paint or Not to Paint?

June 15, 2016 By stylishrevamp 1 Comment

Hello everyone! I am happy to say that we are down to the final two days of school here!  Thank Goodness!  That’s all I can say, we are so done with this school year.  It’s been a great year but we are ready to go into summer mode.  We are ready for late nights, lazy days, pool time, the cape, the Island Home and the beach!  It would be ideal if school ended at Memorial Day.

The weather here has been fabulous.  We have had a nice warm breeze and sunny skies which makes for perfect pool days.  I took this photo on Sunday while we were hanging out at the pool.

Enjoying this fabulous weather

Everything is in full bloom and looks so pretty.

So in between being lazy and relaxing by the pool, I finally got around to digging out an old desk lamp that we have had forever. We picked up this desk lamp in Virginia many years ago.  It had no wiring and was a bit beat up but my husband and I both liked it.

To Paint or Not to Paint?

That is what I am trying to decide at the moment.

Vintage Desk Lamo

At first, I was definitely going to paint it, then I went to this website and saw all of their Vintage lamps and now I am undecided.  My hubs told me to live with it for a while and then decide. I think I kind of like it, it reminds me of this vintage Boston Pencil Sharpener that I picked up at the flea market.

Vintage Boston Pencil Sharpener

They look very similar to me.

My husband had to rewire the lamp which he taught me how to do.  It seems like a fairly simple thing that I might try on my own it the future.

Rewiring a vintage lamp

Base of a vintage desk lamp

I love all the small details on this little desk lamp. I am still trying to figure out what screwed into the base of the lamp.  I reached out the website I mentioned earlier, hoping that they could shed some light on that for me. I am not quite sure what the other grooves were for, I am assuming pens and maybe paperclips.  At least that’s what I would use them for.

Until I decide if I am going to paint or not, I will enjoy it in its original state.

What do you think, should I paint or not?

A 10 Dollar GoodWill Makeover

June 3, 2016 By stylishrevamp 9 Comments

Wow, it has been well over a week since I have posted.  We are in the middle of a few projects, getting the yard area cleaned and ready for summer, and anxiously awaiting the end of the school year, which is dragging on and on. The school year seems even longer for Gman since his older brothers finished up their freshmen and junior year at college about a month ago. Nine more days to go and we will be free for the summer!

In the middle of all this chaos, I still had time to stop by my favorite shopping establishment…#GoodWill, several times, and walked away with this beauty…

A $10 Goodwill Furniture Makeover

I am so glad I decided to buy this little desk! I didn’t really have a place for it and it was in rough shape but it was only $10. Yes, ten dollars! I kept coming back to and in the end I am so happy I brought this baby home with me.  I found the perfect little spot for it and the hubs agrees, which does not always happen!  I love when things come together!  In the beginning, I was not so sure.

This is what it looked like when I first saw it…

GoodWill Finds Looking beyond the Ugly

It was ugly and it definitely had an odor to it, but I still liked it!  It was missing a knob, the hinge was broken, and it was covered in markers, paint and stickers. For 10 dollars, it was worth trying to do something with it.

The first thing I did was scrub it down with some cleaner and disinfectant.  Then I got started with the sanding.  I was surprised that it did not take that long to sand it down. Once the dust was wiped off really well, I stained it with a dark walnut stain. I am beginning to like the process of staining much better than painting. It is instant gratification when the stain hits the wood.

$10 GoodWill Revamp

I also added Lion Head knobs on the drawer.  I picked them up at Ace Hardware.

GoodWill Treasure

I have to say, I am absolutely loving this $10 GoodWill makeover.

I hope you all have a great weekend.

Until Next Time,

My Love Affair with Gold and White Continues

May 20, 2016 By stylishrevamp 1 Comment

Yes, it is that time again…Thrift Shop Thursday #28, my love affair with Gold and White continues.

My Love affair continues with Gold and White

I picked up these brass drawer pulls several months ago at a consignment shop.  I am just waiting for the perfect project so I can use them.

Brass Drawer Pulls

Sharing my Love of Gold

Check out the gold ruler and gold scissors.  My husband picked these up for me.  He knows me so well! The gold and white journal came from T.J. Maxx.  I am keeping a wish list with images of future projects that I would like to tackle. I keep all of this minus the drawer pulls on my desk in my office which you can see here.  I really love this space. It suits me perfectly!

White Bowl from Goodwill

I scooped up this little white bowl at Goodwill.  I like that it is kind of like a pedestal bowl.  It also has what looks like lion heads on each side of it.  There is just something special about this little bowl! Now I  need to find my every day white dishes and finally part ways with my blue, maroon, gold, and green Longaberger dishes.  I know what I want, I just need to bite the bullet and do it!

White Pedestal Bowl from GoodWill

Technically, my last steal is not a thrift shop find but I still want to share it with you all.  I picked it up at the grocery store in the floral department.

AIr plant in white bird planter

As soon as I saw it, I thought it would be perfect on my thrift shop three tiered stand which I shared here.

Decorating my Thrifted Three Tiered Stand with Thrifted finds

I have added both the white Goodwill bowl and the air plant to my tiered tray.  I am so glad I chose to paint the stand white.  I think it looks so much better white than black. I like switching out the pieces on the tray too.

Today I was able to go outside and get a few pictures that I want to share tomorrow.  We have been getting hit with so much rain and today was the first day without it.  As much as I am getting tired of the rain, it has made our lawn and landscaping nice and lush.  The rain is moving back into our area this weekend which is slowing down another project that we are in the midst of.

We, mainly my husband is working on our garage.  We need to have good weather to complete the flooring which seems like it will be awhile before that happens. I cannot wait to share that with you as well.  Maybe I will do a quick post on the before and during stages.

I hope you have enjoyed this installment of Thrift Shop Thursday #28, My Love of White and Gold Continues.

Until Next Time,

Window Shopping at the Consignment Store

May 6, 2016 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

Today I stopped by one of our local Consignment Stores and did a little window shopping.  Since my husband is busy working on a new project in the garage which includes cleaning up and clearing out the garage, I didn’t feel like it would be such a great idea to bring in more stuff,  so I  decided to window shop instead.  Of course today was the day that I found several pieces that I liked…a lot!

Wooden counter stool that would look awesome in my kitchen!

These wooden counter stools almost came home with me today.  I think these would look great  in our kitchen.  I wasn’t sure about the low back on them though but having said that…gosh, I still think they are perfect! If these stool are still there once they make their final price drop, they just may make their way home with me!

Old white wicker furniture

Outdoor Wicker in White

Check out all of this white wicker.  These pieces are large and fabulous! We bought two old wicker chairs for the Island Home several years ago and they are my favorite outdoor chairs! I really, really like this set as well.  Do I need them? No! They are just so awesome!

Metal Garden Furniture

White Outdoor Metal Chairs

More outdoor furniture that I love.  I still might go back and pick up two of these chairs.  I think I would paint them black and put them on my sunroom porch off of the front of the house. I already have a table, chairs and a bench out there that is painted black and I still need a bit more seating. These just might work!

Apparently, today was chair day.

White Leather Desk Chairs

I was looking for something like this about a year ago for my office and one of these would have been perfect.

More chairs…

Ghost Chairs in a smoky grey

Ghost chairs in a smoky grey, I am not sure if I am a fan or not.

Black Metal Chairs

These black metal chairs on the other hand, I love.  They remind me of the chairs Joanna Gaines uses a lot to style her homes on The Fixer Upper. They are new and still wrapped in foam packing.

Painted Gray Wood Cabinet

Lastly, I wanted to share this cabinet.  I think this grey cabinet is adorable.  It has a lot of detail and my favorite part about this piece is the little shelf on top.  Too bad I have nowhere to put it!

The shop had so many great pieces today and it was hard to keep this trip just a window shopping excursion but I did! I need to make sure when I leave the gym tomorrow that I turn left instead of right or some of these piece my find a new home right here with me!

Thanks for stopping by, I hope you enjoyed a peek into my shopping trip.

I hope you all have a great weekend…Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there and to all the people that have loved another person like a mom. Enjoy your weekend!

Until Next Time,

Using Paint to Update Your Space

May 3, 2016 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

It’s no secret that I have a small obsession with spray paint.  So today I am sharing how I was able to update a little space in my sunroom using one of my new favorite paints that I shared here.

I have had these bookcases for many years.  They are made from reclaimed barn wood and I have shared them before. They are still in my sunroom but since we updated the sunroom with new furniture and changed up the colors in the room the accessories in the book case were the last thing to be updated.

I really didn’t want to go out and buy all new accessories for my bookcases but I wanted to lighten them up, they were dark maroon, mustard yellow and green. It’s funny how your taste changes over the years.

Updating accessories with Paint

I painted the large vase and even the small photo frame using Rust-oleum Chalked Spray Paint. The stain on the barn wood is pretty dark and I wanted all of the accessories to be white, cream or grey.

Using Rustoleum Chalked Spray Paint

This pot was mustard yellow.  It’s a great piece and was easily updated with paint.

Using neutrals accessories to lighten up a dark bookcase

I always felt like the corners in the sunroom were a bit dark, but now I am loving it with this simple change.

Reclaimed Wood Bookcases Styled

I think I might lighten the bookcases next…by removing some of the dark wax.  They were like that when I bought them many moons ago. They are looking a bit too dark for me now in the lighter room.

Another thing I would like to change, even though I am not ready to mention this to the hubs just yet is the wall color.  I know exactly what he is going to say, “It’s not even a year old!” And he would be correct but it just looks muddy to me now. I want it to be a more crisp beige/grey. I can paint furniture all day long but the one thing I cannot do and will no longer even attempt, is painting a wall.  I don’t know what happens but I cannot do it…at all!  Anyway, that’s another conversation for different day!

Remember when I shared my DIY Photo Clipboard? Well, I made another one and stained it a weathered grey.

DIY Photo Clipboard

I am sure my boys love that I am sharing this picture all over the place.  It’s and oldie but a goodie!  Look at all that hair!  Gosh I miss those days! #cuties!!!  It’s an old Christmas card that has been propped up in the bookcase and I had leftover wood and decided to make another DIY photo clipboard.

Updating this space with paint was so easy and I think it made a huge impact on the room.

Until Next Time,

Thrift Shop Thursday #27

April 28, 2016 By stylishrevamp 2 Comments

I am late again this week.  We have had a lot going on but things are starting to wind down a bit.  Now here we are again at another Thrift Shop Thursday #27. Some of my picks this week are not exactly from thrift shops but I did get some great deals.

Thrift Shop Finds

I found this adorable little mouse tea light holder in a small town on the Eastern Shore. We were actually at a Harry Potter Festival in the midst of a scavenger hunt when I stumble across this little tea light.

Metal Tea Light Holder

Even though I am scared to death of mice, I still think this is a cute tea light. At first, I was superstitious about decorating with it.  I kept thinking, the minute I add it to my bookshelf, we are going to get mice. I don’t know why, but that is the way my brain works.

I like picking up little things like this to add to my home, something unique that adds a bit of whimsy! With a male dominate household, a girl needs a bit of whimsy!

Next, I picked up this lantern at HomeGoods several months ago. I knew that I wanted to add it to my sunroom for a casual “beachy” feel.

Lantern from HomeGoods

The wood on the lantern reminds me of driftwood. I like that it doesn’t look like something that I just picked up. It looks as if it has been well loved over time.  It has a weather look to it and you know I love driftwood,  you can see some of my projects here, here and here. I think it fits into my sunroom perfectly.

Remember last week when I was talking about my poinsettias?

Well, they are still alive, although one is looking a little droopy.  I think it needs to be in a place in my home that does not get as much sunlight.  Well, last week I mentioned that I had picked up a silver ice bucket and I wanted to share that with you.

Silver Ice Bucket from GoodWill

This is such a nice, thick and solid silver ice bucket.  I picked it up for a dollar. Yes, it was a dollar, one, $1 dollar.  I have seen similar items like this at PotteryBarn ranging from $79-$89.  So for a dollar, I am using it for a planter. I will let you know if this baby survives until Christmas which is only 8 months away!

Lastly, I am sharing my tobacco baskets.  Love, love love these baskets.  I have searched for these at every antique, thrift, and  consignment shop I have come across with no luck. ZERO! ZIP! ZILCH!

Decorating with Tobacco Baskets

I was finally able to pick these up from Decor Steals.  If you are not familiar with this site you need to check it out.  I have bought a few things from them and have been happy with all of my purchases. Basically,  at 10 a.m. Eastern time, they offer a deal of the day. The items are about 80% off retail prices, they sell fast, and each day is different.

As for the pig, we have had him for so long, I can’t remember where he came from, it’s like he has always been here!

I feel like when I go thrift shopping, if I have in mind what I want, I never find it!

Built-ins and decorating

I have been looking for something, anything for the top shelf of this built-in for such a long time. I decorate it for Christmas and the Autumn season but the rest of the time, I struggle.  If you all have any ideas let me know.  Until then I will keep searching all my favorite thrift shops!

Have a great weekend.

Until Next Time,
