How to Make an Easy DIY Feasting Board

February 16, 2017 By stylishrevamp 1 Comment

I am so exited that the weekend is almost here! It has been a long, cold and windy week,  so motivation around here has been low on all fronts! Although, I was able to complete a small DIY project.

Earlier this week, I was browsing our local Home and Garden shop and ran across a lovely Feasting Board.  For $95 though, I passed but I did use it for my inspiration this week.

Inspiration for my DIY Feasting Board

How to Make an Easy DIY Feasting Board

Project List

scrap wood

wood stain

drawer pulls

nail gun (Hammer and finishing nails work just fine)

drill

combination square (called in the hubs for this part)

How to Make an Easy DIY Feasting Board

I had everything on hand. To begin, I found a piece of wood in my scrap wood pile. I would have preferred a longer piece of wood but I made do with what I had and it still worked out well.

The building process of a DIY feasting board.

For the feet or the legs of the feasting board, I cut two piece of scrap wood about an inch shorter than the width of the top of the board.  I used my Ryobi brad nailer to attach the pieces together.

I  stained the piece and let it dry overnight. Once dry, I applied wax to protect the wood.  I like to use the American Decor Creme Wax from Home Depot. Then I brought the hubs in to attach the drawer pulls for handles.  Normally, I would do this on my own but I could not center them on the top to save my life! He got out the t square or combination square, did some math and attached them perfectly.

Here is my version of the Feasting/Feast Board!

Paint Pens and Pallets – A DIY Christmas Sign

November 23, 2016 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

We are having our Thanksgiving meal today.    Tomorrow we will head out for dinner with family but we wanted to have leftovers so I am making the entire dinner with all the trimmings today. I love the smell of turkey and stuffing cooking in the oven.  So while the turkey is roasting,  I wanted to share another quick Christmas sign with you using paint pens and pallets.

Using Pallets and Paint Pens to make DIY Christmas Signs

A few weeks ago I shared my DIY Christmas Trees for Sale sign.  I love the way it turned out and decided to make another Christmas sign this time using pallets and paint pens.  I really love the paint pens because they are so easy to use. The Pallets on the other hand not so much.

My son brought home a pallet from work and I loved the color on it. What I did not like was how difficult that thing was to take apart. I know some people can tear through a pallet within thirty minutes but not me!  I was finally able to get enough pieces off of mine to make the sign then I was done.

Can you see the big blocks of red wood on the pallet?  I have a great idea for those pieces but sadly they are still attached to the remaining bits of the pallet and at the moment I have no desire to try to rip them off!  I am hoping BK will finish it off for me.

Breaking down a pallet

Back to the sign…I basically did the  same set up on this sign, using carbon paper and making my stencil.  You can read more details on the process here.  The only difference with this sign was using the pallet wood which made it a bit more rustic looking.  I cut the pieces down to size and gave them a good sanding.  The pieces are still a bit rough but I like the rustic look it adds to the sign.  I attached the four pieces of wood together with some scrap wood and my Ryobi Brad Nailer.

Once everything was ready, I let the Gman paint the lettering with the paint pens while I enjoyed a cup of coffee.

I am so ready to start decorating for Christmas.  I am going to begin on Friday after I do the Turkey Burn at the gym which is a 90 minute workout.  O.K. first I will do the Turkey Burn, take a nap then I will get started with my decorating.  I am looking forward to using my new signs in my Christmas decorating this year.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving with friends and family.

Until Next Time,

Updating a Thrifted Find with Stain and Stenciling

February 17, 2016 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

Today I am sharing a quick update to an old thrifted find using stain and stenciling.  I first shared this find on Thrift Shop Thursday #18.  As you can tell, I am so into wood trays, wood signs, and cutting boards at the moment!

Unfinished tray/cutting board from the Thrift Shop.

This update was super easy.  I stained the wood and let it dry.  I then used my Cricut Cutter and cut out the letter K and used it as a stencil. I then used black paint and stippled it over the stencil.  I used the black to tie it in with the black hooks on the wall shelving.

Stained and Stenciled Cutting board

The only thing I might do differently with this tray/cutting board is add a few more coats of stain to make it a bit darker.  I want to live with it like this for a while then see how I feel in a few days before I jump in and add more stain.

I had everything on hand so this was a free update and a great project to work on while be snowed in again!  At this rate, the Gman will be going to school until the end of June!  Don’t get me wrong I love snow days, I only wish they did not have to make them up at the end of the year.  I am so over school by the end of May that it is a struggle getting them out the door after that!

I hope you enjoy this quick and easy update to an old thrifted find!

Until Next Time,

Designing a DIY Wood Sign

February 9, 2016 By stylishrevamp 1 Comment

First, let’s start off with… Way to go Denver!  Umm, really I don’t follow football…at all.  I just really like the Super Bowl party that we’ve been going to every year and seeing my friends, and I like half time, and let’s not forget about the Super Bowl food! Yep, that just about sums up my interest in football!

So, what I really do like at the moment is making and designing DIY wood signs.  This past Christmas I made the Believe sign. The year before that I made the Christmas Countdown Sign. (Still my favorite) I am already thinking about the sign I want to make for next Christmas!

I wanted to design a wood sign with our house number on it.  I have seen a few of these floating around on Pinterest but I wanted mine to look similar to a chalkboard.  So, this is what I came up with over the weekend.

Designing a DIY Wood Sign

Making these signs are so easy and inexpensive.  I used left over wood in the garage.  However, I did pick up more stain and an extra trim piece at Home Depot.

DIY Wood Home Sign

**This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive compensation if you make a purchase using this link.**

The first thing I did was trim my wood to the size I wanted.  I needed mine to be kind of small so it would fit within my shelves. Once I got set up and went to start the circular saw, it wouldn’t start.  Talk about being frustrated!  It was freezing cold outside, I got everything ready, plugged the saw in and nothing! I knew at this point to just put everything away and start again another day because I tend to get sloppy when I am frustrated. I ended up buying the Ryobi battery Circular Saw.  I really like it.  For one, it is so much lighter than the saw we had, plus the Ryobi battery pack it uses is the same one that I have for my Ryobi brad nailer. I find all of their products very easy to use.

So once the cut was made, on the board for the actual sign, I found a can of white paint left over from previous projects.  I painted the board with two quick coats and let it dry overnight. The next day I used my Cricut cutter and cut the letters and numbers needed.  I used the chalkboard font for the letters.  I am not crazy about the font but I let Gman pick it out and he loves it so, I am fine with it. It is actually beginning to grow on me a bit.  The numbers were already loaded onto the Cricut so I used those rather than the chalkboard font. I wanted the numbers to be a bit more precise if that makes sense. Again, if you do not have a Cricut, you can used vinyl stickers from Michaels, stencils or free hand.

Once the letters and numbers were added to my board, I painted over the entire board with a flat black paint. While that was drying, I made the cuts to my frame pieces.  My husband tells me to measure twice and cut once.  I measure about 10 times and cut twice as much as that.  Sometimes I can make the simplest things the hardest! When I finally got the correct cuts, I stained the wood pieces with MinWax in Jacobean.

When everything was dry, I peeled the vinyl letters off the board. I gave it a light sanding to make the black paint look like a chalkboard.  Some of the white paint is popping through which helps give it the look of a wiped off chalkboard. Lastly, I attached the stained wood trim with my ryobi brad nailer

Repurposing Driftwood into a Charming DIY Whale

June 6, 2014 By stylishrevamp 1 Comment

Repurposing driftwood into a charming whale.

Every time we go to the Island Home we collect pieces of driftwood  and I have been holding on to this piece since last summer. I have been seeing driftwood/reclaimed wood whales online that I love so I decided to make one of my own.

DIY Driftwood Whale

I had my husband draw the outline for me and I used a jigsaw to cut it out. It was my first time using the jigsaw and it wasn’t as easy as it looks on t.v. I think I tried to cut it too quickly.  I had my husband touch up the misguided cuts then he used a grinder to smooth out the edges.

Serving Tray

May 26, 2014 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

Today I finished a few small projects and the first one  I am going to share with you is a  serving tray that I made. I will post the other projects later in the week.  They were  super easy and quick.

I have been on the hunt for a cheap serving tray that I could rework to use on our screened in porch.  I have searched Goodwill and all my other favorite spots and haven’t found anything that would work.

So today I finally got to work and made one myself.

Family Birthday Calendar

February 16, 2014 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

Several months ago my sister in law saw a family birthday calendar on Pinterest that she liked and she asked me if I could make one for her.  I told her I would and I FINALLY started and completed it! It wasn’t that hard to do it just seemed like every time I would think about getting started something would get in the way….Mainly CHARLIE

DSCN4593

He is so cute but he is A LOT of work!!!

Anyway, back to the Calendar…this is the finished product.

DIY Family Birthday Calendar

My supply list included:

Scrap of wood

Vinyl lettering

Decorative tape

paint and brush

eye hooks

decoupage

sanding block

stickers

tags

Family Birthday Calendar Supplies

The first thing I did was sand my piece of wood. Then I did a base coat of white paint.  Once that was dry I added the vinyl lettering and spelled out Family Birthdays.  I then painted over the entire board with my second paint choice which was blue.  After that was dry I removed the vinyl lettering.  I used the sanding block over the entire board again. I like the effect it had on the lettering. I then added  the stickers for the months of the year.  I was going to stencil those  but I knew I would never be able to get that done.  I added some decorative tape just to give it some dimension and add a little something extra to it.  I added eye hooks to the bottom and attached tags for the names and dates of the birthdays.  I will eventually switch the tags out for metal disks once I master the art of metal stamping.  Right now I am still in the learning process!

I think it turned out great.  I might have to make one for myself…

Home Office

December 28, 2013 By stylishrevamp 3 Comments

We have been working in the basement on and off for a few months and I decided to carve out a space for our blog work. We also set up a little photography studio for my tech guy!

We built a simple desk that suits us and gives us plenty of space for our individual needs.  We still need to add some finishing touches but we are getting there.

DIY Desk With Horse Aluminum Legs

We made the desk from metal/aluminum sawhorses and four 2 feet by 6 feet planks of wood.

DIY Desk With Stain        DIY Desk With Saw Horse Legs

We used joiners to pull the seams together on the four separate planks of wood.  Then we attached the sawhorses to the planks with metal screws.  I used leftover wood to trim out the front and sides of the desk to give it a more finished look.  I did not countersink the screws on the trim pieces which adds a more industrial look to the piece. Once that was complete I finished it off with barn wood grey stain.

We recovered an old bulletin board with burlap,  added a few whiteboards and hung our wire rack organizer which was a gift from two of our biggest supporters (Thanks Kim and Sandy!)

Check out our personalized mugs from Santa! He also gave us the Cricut Expression 2.  We are still trying to figure our how to use it.  I will leave that up to my tech guy to figure it out and explain it to me!

Grocery Sign

September 15, 2013 By stylishrevamp 5 Comments

I am such a huge fan of Sarah Richardson.  I DVR all her shows.  My all time favorite is Sarah’s Cottage.  I would watch each episode over and over when we bought our Island Home.  I love the Groceries sign she found while out shopping with Tommy.  I finally decided to make my own version of it today.

DIY Grocery Sign

I started off with a scrap piece of wood that I found in the garage.  I had several letter from Michaels that I bought on clearance a while back.  I painted the scrap would Pure White Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.  I painted the letters Annie Sloan’s Graphite.  Once everything was dry I attached them with hot glue.  Easy Project.  This will look so cute in the kitchen at the Island Home.  I may just have to make a quick trip tomorrow because I am missing that peaceful place. This is what I started with:

So this was my inspiration from Sarah Richardson.
