Updating a Thrifted Find with Stain and Stenciling

February 17, 2016 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

Today I am sharing a quick update to an old thrifted find using stain and stenciling.  I first shared this find on Thrift Shop Thursday #18.  As you can tell, I am so into wood trays, wood signs, and cutting boards at the moment!

Unfinished tray/cutting board from the Thrift Shop.

This update was super easy.  I stained the wood and let it dry.  I then used my Cricut Cutter and cut out the letter K and used it as a stencil. I then used black paint and stippled it over the stencil.  I used the black to tie it in with the black hooks on the wall shelving.

Stained and Stenciled Cutting board

The only thing I might do differently with this tray/cutting board is add a few more coats of stain to make it a bit darker.  I want to live with it like this for a while then see how I feel in a few days before I jump in and add more stain.

I had everything on hand so this was a free update and a great project to work on while be snowed in again!  At this rate, the Gman will be going to school until the end of June!  Don’t get me wrong I love snow days, I only wish they did not have to make them up at the end of the year.  I am so over school by the end of May that it is a struggle getting them out the door after that!

I hope you enjoy this quick and easy update to an old thrifted find!

Until Next Time,

Home Office

December 28, 2013 By stylishrevamp 3 Comments

We have been working in the basement on and off for a few months and I decided to carve out a space for our blog work. We also set up a little photography studio for my tech guy!

We built a simple desk that suits us and gives us plenty of space for our individual needs.  We still need to add some finishing touches but we are getting there.

DIY Desk With Horse Aluminum Legs

We made the desk from metal/aluminum sawhorses and four 2 feet by 6 feet planks of wood.

We used joiners to pull the seams together on the four separate planks of wood.  Then we attached the sawhorses to the planks with metal screws.  I used leftover wood to trim out the front and sides of the desk to give it a more finished look.  I did not countersink the screws on the trim pieces which adds a more industrial look to the piece. Once that was complete I finished it off with barn wood grey stain.

We recovered an old bulletin board with burlap,  added a few whiteboards and hung our wire rack organizer which was a gift from two of our biggest supporters (Thanks Kim and Sandy!)

Check out our personalized mugs from Santa! He also gave us the Cricut Expression 2.  We are still trying to figure our how to use it.  I will leave that up to my tech guy to figure it out and explain it to me!
