Christmas in the City

December 20, 2013 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

When I was growing up, my mom would put a village under the Christmas Tree every year.  I would lay under the tree and wish that I could live in that little village.  The village had ice skaters on the pond, carolers singing and children sled riding.  It was just magical.

When I got married I wanted to start that same tradition in our home.  My husband bought me my first village piece on our 2nd Christmas together as a married couple and has added many pieces since then. For the past two years, he has been doing the village for me with our youngest.  He has added the Lionel Train that his dad got for him and his brothers for Christmas when they were little. I hope these are memories my children will share with their future children.

Holly Tree Decorated for Christmas with Red and White Lights

My favorite Holly Tree.

 Outdoor Christmas Decoration

We used red and white lights on the trees, garland around the porches and wreaths on all the windows and front door.

Outdoor Fireplace

I love how the fireplace and patio area turned out.  I used clipping and inserted them into the dirt in the pots.  I used magnolia branches, pine, and boxwoods.

As you can see, this is my favorite time of year!

Christmas Home Tour

December 8, 2013 By stylishrevamp 6 Comments

Welcome to our Christmas Home Tour.  Sit back with a warm drink and enjoy some of our favorite Holiday decorations.  I love pulling these decorations out year after year.  It brings back such lovely memories of Christmas past.  We also try to add a few new touches along with some favorite vintage finds. I hope you all enjoy!

Christmas Decor

This is our family room tree.  We go each year to a farm and choose the largest tree we can find.  This is where Santa leaves all the gifts.

The view from upstairs… I like watching the boys look over the banister on Christmas morning!

Christmas Mantel

We leave cookies and milk for Santa on this fireplace Hearth.

Vintage Sled With with Flocked Tree Branches

This is a vintage sled that my husband and I bought before we were married.  I just spruced it up with  some pine branches and ribbon and sprayed everything with a light dusting of snow.

Vintage Shiny Brite Christmas Ornaments

I like to use some of my favorite vintage finds on the Family room Christmas tree like these Shiny Brite ornaments! I love finding vintage Holiday decorations.  I also have the milk glass light bulbs that I will show you in a later post.  They are one of my favorite Christmas items.

Next up is my foyer.

Banister decked out for Christmas

I put  garland around the front stairs.  I also add snowmen on each step.  I got this idea from a dear friend that uses Nutcrackers.  Thanks Debbie for the great idea!

Large Pinecone Christmas Decor

This is the mirror by my front door.  I add the large pinecone every year.  I like the simplicity of it.

Wooden Santas

My tech guy Gman  made the snowman in art class and my Best Friend gave me the lovely Santa for Christmas last year!

Vintage Christmas Plate

When my oldest two boys were younger, I would let them pick pick out a special Christmas decoration. My youngest still carries on this tradition.  This Santa is something my middle son picked out.  I added the vintage plate above in the alcove and the garland with winterberry.

Christmas Countdown

November 21, 2013 By stylishrevamp 4 Comments

Today I am sharing with you, my homemade totally free Christmas Countdown sign.  Everything I used, I found around the house and the garage!

DIY Christmas Countdown

Don’t pay attention to the number of day until Christmas.  That is what the actual countdown was when I made the sign and I am not ready to know how many days are REALLY left until Christmas until I get through Thanksgiving first! Then I can begin to panic a bit because I already feel like I am behind.

The sign was really easy to make.  I found the wood in the garage left over from a previous project.  I sprayed the entire piece of wood with a silver spray paint which I used on a bottle cap project that you can find here. I also used the silver paint on my wine rack which I will share with you in a later post. Once the silver paint was dry, I used my vinyl letters to spell out Christmas Countdown and Days! I then used Pure White Chalk Paint from Annie Sloan to cover the entire piece.  Once that was good and dry, I used Emperors Silk Annie Sloan Chalk Paint to paint over the entire piece again.  While that was drying, I used a smaller piece of wood and sprayed it with chalkboard paint for the number part of the sign.  I then found one of our Christmas cards from last year and cut out the Santa.  When everything was dry, I peeled off the vinyl letters to reveal the silver paint beneath the letters.  I used wood glue to attach the chalkboard piece of wood to the sign. I then decoupaged the Santa to the sign and then gave the piece a light sanding so some of the white would show through the red. I think the sign is adorable and once I get my fall decorations down I can’t wait to decorate with it!

 DIY Christmas Countdown

ALSO I WANTED TO WISH MY OLDEST A HAPPY 18TH BIRTHDAY! I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE YOU OVER THANKSGIVING BREAK!

Driftwood Christmas Tree

November 14, 2013 By stylishrevamp 9 Comments

Design your own DIY Driftwood Christmas Tree/ Easy step by step process with materials list.

I love this time of year.  The weather is finally turning cold and I love getting ready for the Holidays.  I enjoy everything about it. Although, I think my favorite part is decorating the house and I have had this project on my mind since last year…

While I was out shopping with some friends, I saw a Driftwood Christmas Tree but it was $65.00.  I knew I could make my own version of it for a lot less.  Since then I have seen them in the Restoration Hardware Catalog ($79.00-$179.00) and The Home Decorators Collection Catalog ($63.00).  So here is my version of the Driftwood Christmas Tree.

Driftwood Christmas Tree Restoration Hardware Hack

My Supply List Includes:

Cardboard Cone Shape (I got mine from Michaels)

Driftwood

Hot glue Gun and Glue Sticks

Artificial Spray Snow

Driftwood Christmas Tree

It was pretty much the same process as the Driftwood Wreath which you can find here.  Some of the trees I saw, the driftwood was placed horizontally around the tree. For my first tree, I thought placing the driftwood vertically would be easier.  So I found similair size pieces and glued them around the base like this…

DIY Driftwood Christmas Tree

I continued adding pieces all the way around the base overlapping them as I moved up the tree.   I had to break  some of the driftwood into  smaller pieces just to get the right size.  It’s very easy to do and I like how each tree has it’s own character. This is what the tree looked like before I added the spray snow.

 DIY Driftwood Christmas Tree

This is a picture of it with the  spray snow.  I am not sure which one I like the best… with or with out the snow?

This was such an easy and inexpensive project that anyone can do.

I hope you enjoyed this quick and easy Driftwood Project.

Finishing Touches

November 6, 2013 By stylishrevamp 2 Comments

Just a quick update on a few of my projects.  Remember my flea market find?  I finally made a quick trip to the house and was able to install this vintage match holder that I have revamped into a bottle cap holder.

Vintage Canada Dry Bottle Opener and Vintage Match Box Holder

While we were there, I also hung  my GROCERY sign (click here to see how I made it).  I really like the sign and it adds a little something to the kitchen.

DIY Grocery Store Sign

Now here is a sneak peek at something I am going to be working on soon.  I found this piece at one of my favorite spots near the Island.  I have been there several times and never remember to take a picture.  I am going to use this piece in my Island Kitchen as a wine rack.  Here is my before picture. Remember my driftwood wreath which you can also see here.  I will post more photos once I get it painted.  Still trying to decide on a color.  I am thinking of using the same Stainless Steel paint that I used on the vintage match holder but still not sure.

Pedestal Table

October 24, 2013 By stylishrevamp 3 Comments

It has been a crazy couple of weeks around here but I am back and trying to finish up some projects that have been stashed in my garage and utility room for too long!

This past summer I picked up a few free pieces and one of them was a table top.  It came from a shop that we used to go into all the time near the Island.  One day we drove up and it was out of business but they left some things outside with a cardboard sign that said FREE!  We picked up a pallet and the tabletop.  The tabletop had paint smeared across it and the laminate was pulling away from the sides.  I didn’t care it was free and I knew we could turn it into something.  My son no longer ask me WHY? or ARE YOU SURE? He just says I will load it up for you…Thanks B.K.

The pallet is still sitting in the utility room but I finally painted painted the tabletop.  Then it sat for a few more weeks until I could find a base.  Two weeks ago we took a trip to the Island to finish up a few last minute things there and made a quick stop at one of my favorite spots and YES I found a table base.  I had found one there before and I was back and forth trying to decide if I really liked it…and I am so glad I waited because I found this…..

Table Base Thrift Store Find

and I knew it would be perfect for the tabletop!

It is kind of hard to tell in the photo but it kind of has a yellow tint to it but I knew that I could paint it so it was no big deal.  The other thing you can’t tell from the photo is that the base it metal which I love.  Here is the end result….

Longitude Latitiude DIY Table

I just set it up in my living room so I could show you how it turned out.  I used Annie Sloan chalk paint in Graphite for the tabletop and rubbed a bit of the Pure White paint over it so it wasn’t so flat.  Once that was dry I stenciled the longitude and latitude of the Island.  On the base I also used the Pure White.  Super easy and I think it turned out great!

Come back later and I will show you some of my other finds and the odds and ends that we did at the Island Home before prepping the house for Winter!

Halloween Treat Bags

October 13, 2013 By stylishrevamp 1 Comment

Since my son is dressing up as Harry Potter for Halloween he wanted a treat bag that would go with his costume.  We looked at the bags when we were out but none of them seemed to work.

Then when I was putting the groceries away I got the idea to use one of my grocery bags for his treat bag.

DIY Halloween Harry Potter Bag

I used fabric paint that I had on hand and my son printed off the lettering that he found here.  I cut the letters out and traced them on the bag with a white colored pencil then painted them.

It was a very quick and easy project and now my son has his own custom treat bag to go with his Harry Potter costume!

Fall/Halloween Decor

October 8, 2013 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

We have finally finished our interior decorating for Fall/Halloween. I love digging through the decorations that I have saved from year to year.  It brings back memories of when all the boys were little. The decoration are not fancy but they are special.  Most of them were picked out by the boys when they were still being pushed around in the stroller.  I remember when my oldest was just a tiny little thing and he did not speak for the longest time but every morning when he came down and I sat him in his highchair for breakfast he would use sign language for light which meant he wanted me to turn on the Halloween Village lights that I had sitting on the kitchen counter.  I still pull that village out every year and he is a Freshman in College.  So here are a few of my Fall/Halloween decorations that we enjoy from year to year.

pumpkin

I love this pumpkin.  It has such a pretty glow but my favorite thing in this photo is a picture of my two oldest out trick or treating with me and my dad (which you can see in the corner of this photo). Love it!!

Halloween Tree

This is my Halloween Tree that we decorate every year.  If you look close enough you can see the pumpkin at the base of the tree that my youngest made when he was in preschool.  He is now in 4th grade (he is my tech guy that I refer to in my blog)

Fall Halloween Mantle

This is my fall mantel that I showed you here (where you can learn how to make the chalkboard banner).  So some old favorites mixed in with some new DIY decorations.

Halloween Decor

Remember the flea market that I mentioned here?  Well I found this…

Thrift Shop FInd

And turned it into this…

Cloche Decorated for Fall

and then this…

Cloche for Halloween Decorating

This is one of the Village pieces I was talking about earlier…not the fanciest but so special to me!

Up next will be the exterior of the house.  I like to do the pretty Fall decorating but I promised my youngest that we could do “scary” outside this year.  I guess Fall flowers and pumpkins do not count for scary
