Outdoor (Solar) Lamp

May 17, 2014 By stylishrevamp 3 Comments

My thrift shop lamp has been revamped into an outdoor solar lamp and I love it!

DIY Solar Lamp

I got this idea back in March when JuNxtaposition posted a picture of a solar lamp.  I thought it was a great idea and I have been checking all of my favorite spots for a lamp that would work well outside.  I didn’t want ceramic because I knew one big gust of wind and it would shatter! A few week ago I stopped in a thrift store and found the perfect lamp…no one else in my family thought it was perfect but I knew they would come around to my way of thinking! It had a huge drum shade that I painted at first but it was just too big for what I wanted and it was just ugly!

The base is so heavy.  It has what looks like concrete in the base of it so I am hoping it can withstand the wind. I actually liked the brass look  but my husband thought it would look better if I sprayed it white.  I am just going to say it …he was right…

I really do like it white too.

I found a different lamp shade and decided to recover it with outdoor fabric that I bought at JoAnn fabric. I also bought some spray adhesive to attach the fabric to the shade.  It was my first time using it and I thought it was pretty easy, hopefully it will hold up well being on the porch.

B.K. had to help me figure out how to measure to get the right dimensions to properly cover the shade.

I put down some newspaper and rolled the shade over it and traced as I went along.  I came up with the half circle pattern. I then used the spray adhesive  on the lampshade and attached the material to it. I clipped it with clothespins and left it overnight just to make sure it was secure.

I trimmed the edges and sprayed them to the underside of the shade.

I love that it is powered by one of the cheap solar landscape lights.  I picked one up at home depot for about $3.00.  It doesn’t throw out a lot of light but it’s just enough.
