Filing Cabinet Revamp

September 24, 2013 By stylishrevamp 7 Comments

We have decided to carve out some space to make a home office for me and my youngest (the one that helps me with this blog).  My husband is giving up some of his space in the man cave.  Once I get more of the space complete, I will share it with you.

So after he agreed to give up some space in the basement for our home office, I knew I wanted to revamp his old filing cabinet. He has had this filing cabinet for a long, long time.  Every time we clean out the garage he says we can get rid of it but we never do. Now I am going to use it in my new space.

Spray Painted Filing Cabinet

I used all my leftover primer and spray paint from previous projects.  I did the base of the cabinet and the drawers in two different shades of gray.  Once that dried, I added the stencil numbers and stripes in white.

This is the Before

Filing Cabinet

I think it will look great in our new space.  I can’t wait to get the office finished and put it to good use.  Here is another photo of the filing cabinet. I think she is looking pretty good considering she has been sitting in one garage or another for over 20 years!

Flea Market Finds

September 21, 2013 By stylishrevamp 5 Comments

Remember I told you my youngest and I went to a Flea Market, a few yard sales and a Consignment shop last weekend.  We had a lot of fun even though we didn’t find a lot of stuff.

Flea Market

It is the thought of finding that one great thing even if it doesn’t look so great when you find it!  I asked my middle son a couple of weeks ago when he was with me at The Island Home if he ever got sick of driving me all over going to my favorite spots and I just loved his answer. He said, ” No Mom, I think it is pretty neat when you see something and and tell me you have to have it and I think what does she want that_____ (insert any word that a teen might use to describe some of the things we bring home from the side of the road) for because I just don’t see it.”  He then tells me that he thinks it’s pretty cool how my projects turn out!  Anyway,  this is the first thing I found at the Flea Market and I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it.

Chair Revamp

September 10, 2013 By stylishrevamp 9 Comments

When I bought two new chairs for the kitchen table I carried the old ones upstairs and put them in the closet.  They have been in that closet for 8 long months…  Waiting and waiting to be revamped.  I reupholstered the other four that I use in the kitchen at the Island home but for some reason I just didn’t have it in me to complete the final two.  I was dreading pulling out the nailhead trim.  It is so time consuming but I have to say this time around it didn’t take that long at all. Maybe that is because I snuck outside and I wasn’t disturbed by the boys needing one thing or another. Plus it was a gorgeous day. So here is the finished kitchen chair.

I think she turned out just perfect.  This is exactly what I was wanting to do but it just took awhile to get started.

Bedroom Tour

September 4, 2013 By stylishrevamp 1 Comment

We made a quick trip to the island home this weekend and did some work on one of the bedrooms. It is still a work in progress but we have come a long way. This is where we are now:

Nautical Accents in Boys Bedroom

On this trip, we painted the dresser with Annie Sloan Chalk paint Emperor’s Silk.  It used to look like this:

Oak Chest   now this…

Red Chalk Paint Dresser

I have to say that was a quick an easy process.  I like the pop of color and I don’t have to hear my youngest say that I paint EVERYTHING white!

We also painted the two stools at the foot of the bed.  We used the Nautical Signs.  I think it looks cute. Again, adding more color!

They used to look like this:

Stool From Target

We just taped off the nautical signs… same process as we used here.

I am still reworking the accessories.  You can probably tell I keep switching out the mirrors.  Once I have more time at the house I will finish off the room.  I am just so, so , so excited to be rid of the blue floral wall paper.  I cannot even explain the amount of wallpaper this house had when we bought it and pictures DO NOT even come close to showing you how it really looked.  All I know is that I will never ever use wall paper…ever!

So this is what it used to look like…..

and now it is looking like this:

Wooden Decorative Art

August 24, 2013 By stylishrevamp 3 Comments

Well, we did it.  We dropped our oldest off at college and let me tell you it was one of the hardest things I have ever, ever done!  Once we left the college, I saw a billboard that said Big Valley Antique Center next exit.  So that is what we did.  I only had 15 minutes to shop so it was a quick whirl around the shop because they were ready to close.  I found two wooden pieces of art and an old Pepsi crate.  Not bad for  a quick stop and it did help cheer me up a bit!

Wooden Wall Art

I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.  For the first coat I used Paris Grey.  Once it was dry I painted over it with Old White.  Then when everything was dry, I used my sanding block to highlight the indentations on the sea horse and conch shell.  I am loving these two pieces and will definitely be taking them to the Island Home.

New Headboard

August 20, 2013 By stylishrevamp 3 Comments

We finally had to get a new headboard for my youngest son.  He originally had a beautiful antique bed that we had had for years.  It finally met it end a couple nights ago.  Having three boys and antique furniture sometimes is not the best fit! So while my middle son and I were heading to the Island home we decided to stop at some of my favorite shops and look for some accessories for my kitchen. Instead,  I found a fabulous headboard that I could not pass up. I found it at Bay Star, if you are ever in the area you have to check this place out.  It is the BEST!

Pottery Barn Headboard redo

First, I used easy  liquid sander deglosser because I did not feel like sanding the piece. I chose Benjamin Moore Regal Select Matte Finish in Twilight Zone. I bought both of these products at ACE Hardware.

This is what the headboard looked like when I found it at the shop.

Pottery Barn Headboard Revamp

I have never seen a headboard like this before.  I love that it has the cork board and plexiglass sliding doors.  I am sure my son will change it up often but for know this is the finished product:

Painted Compass Table

August 13, 2013 By stylishrevamp 8 Comments

I finally started and completed the free side table that I got on the Island.  It sat in my garage for a few weeks because  I couldn’t make up my mind as to what I wanted to do with it.  So every time I went to get in my car there it sat reminding me that I needed to get to work.  So here it is completed…

DIY painted compass table

I used Louis Blue Chalk Paint.  This time around, I found it to be very easy to use. I love the texture it gives to the piece. It looks weathered and kind of washed out.  It will fit in nicely at the Island home.  Once the paint dried, I applied a compass transfer that I order from amazon.com  Also, very easy to use.

So the next time you see a piece of furniture that has seen better days just remember with a little paint you can completely revamp it into something new.

So it went from this…

Living Room

August 8, 2013 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

This is what the living room looked like when we went to view the home.  I got this picture from the real estate brochure.

before family room redo

I fell in love with this home but knew that I wanted something that was lighter and brighter.  I wanted it to feel more like a cottage on the water. So this is what I came up with so far.

family room in shades of blue and white

First, we took down the heavy drapes. I replaced them with burlap panels which are very casual.  Then we  painted the walls a light blue. It makes it look like the room extends out to the water.

antique fireplace surround                        family room in blues and whites

We found this fireplace surround at the same place that I found the desk which you can find here. I love it. It reminds me of the one in my grandmother’s home.  It took us forever to strip the  seven layers of paint off of it. We also replaced the mirror.

goodwill revamped end table

This is a goodwill table that I sprayed white.  The table cost $15. I placed a basket underneath it with all of our blankets for getting cozy during storms and for movie nights.

This room is so light and airy.  I hope you like it as much as I do.

Painted Magazine/Side Table

August 5, 2013 By stylishrevamp 6 Comments

Remember this free find…

photo copy 3

Well, I finished painting it and have decided to use it as my night stand at the Island home.  Since I have no idea when I am going to be back at the house, I quickly style it and took a photo so I could show you.  What do you think?

photo-4 copy 35 photo-4 copy 33 photo-4 copy 34

I picked up the sample size paints at ACE in Honolulu Blue and cloud white. I used painters tape to mark off the stripes in random widths.  Once the paint was dry, I sanded with my sanding block so the lines weren’t so straight.  Then I mixed equal parts water with the cloud white paint and did a quick white wash over the entire piece. I can’t wait to take it to the Island Home.  I think it will look perfect in the master bedroom.
