Paint Pens and Pallets – A DIY Christmas Sign

November 23, 2016 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

We are having our Thanksgiving meal today.    Tomorrow we will head out for dinner with family but we wanted to have leftovers so I am making the entire dinner with all the trimmings today. I love the smell of turkey and stuffing cooking in the oven.  So while the turkey is roasting,  I wanted to share another quick Christmas sign with you using paint pens and pallets.

Using Pallets and Paint Pens to make DIY Christmas Signs

A few weeks ago I shared my DIY Christmas Trees for Sale sign.  I love the way it turned out and decided to make another Christmas sign this time using pallets and paint pens.  I really love the paint pens because they are so easy to use. The Pallets on the other hand not so much.

My son brought home a pallet from work and I loved the color on it. What I did not like was how difficult that thing was to take apart. I know some people can tear through a pallet within thirty minutes but not me!  I was finally able to get enough pieces off of mine to make the sign then I was done.

Can you see the big blocks of red wood on the pallet?  I have a great idea for those pieces but sadly they are still attached to the remaining bits of the pallet and at the moment I have no desire to try to rip them off!  I am hoping BK will finish it off for me.

Breaking down a pallet

Back to the sign…I basically did the  same set up on this sign, using carbon paper and making my stencil.  You can read more details on the process here.  The only difference with this sign was using the pallet wood which made it a bit more rustic looking.  I cut the pieces down to size and gave them a good sanding.  The pieces are still a bit rough but I like the rustic look it adds to the sign.  I attached the four pieces of wood together with some scrap wood and my Ryobi Brad Nailer.

Once everything was ready, I let the Gman paint the lettering with the paint pens while I enjoyed a cup of coffee.

Hand painting DIY Christmas signs using Sharpie paint pens.

I am so ready to start decorating for Christmas.  I am going to begin on Friday after I do the Turkey Burn at the gym which is a 90 minute workout.  O.K. first I will do the Turkey Burn, take a nap then I will get started with my decorating.  I am looking forward to using my new signs in my Christmas decorating this year.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving with friends and family.

Until Next Time,

How to Make an Easy DIY Christmas Sign

November 8, 2016 By stylishrevamp 1 Comment

How I made My DIY Christmas Tree for Sale Sign.

I know we just got through Halloween and we have several weeks before Thanksgiving arrives but today I wanted to share with you an easy DIY Christmas project.  Yes, I said it Christmas.  I love, love, love Christmas but it is too early even for me to begin decorating.

Now having said that, last year on The Fixer Upper, I saw a Christmas sign that I loved and knew that I wanted one.  By the time I saw it though, it was too late to make it and enjoy it over the holiday season.   So I wanted to get a jump on it for this year’s Christmas Season, that is why I am sharing my “How to make and Easy DIY Christmas sign” before we have even had a chance to eat the turkey and stuffing!

DIY Wooden Christmas Trees for Sale Sign

The first thing I had to do was pick up a piece of plywood at Home Depot.  Surprisingly, I did not have any scrap wood around that I could use.  Apparently, the garage clean out this summer was a bit too thorough.  Anyway, I trimmed the wood down to the size I needed to fit over my cooktop.  Then I gave it a quick sanding before giving it two coats of white paint.  Any paint on hand will do.  I originally wanted to spray it with my chalked paint by rustoleum but it was too windy outside and I was impatient so I used some leftover white paint from a previous project and rolled it on…it took about two minutes. (Which reminds me, I need to share with you in a later post a tip on tacky/sticky paint…remind me if I forget)

prep work for my DIY wooden sign

While the paint was drying, I used my stencils to create a pattern for the lettering.  It was easier for me to trace my stencil letters on computer paper then lay the design out on the wood.  It made the placement and spacing of the words easier.

Tracing my letters using carbon paper.

Once I decided on the layout, I placed carbon paper underneath the letters and lightly traced over them.  I only wanted to leave a light outline of the letters.  I wasn’t sure how well the paint would cover over the carbon imprint.

Tracing my letters using carbon paper.

DIY Christmas Trees for Sale Sign

When all the lettering was transferred to the wood, it was time to start painting.  I knew I would never be able to hand paint each letter neatly and stay within the lines.  That’s where the Sharpie Paint Pen comes in…I LOVE these paint pens!  I also used them on my DIY driftwood sign that you can see here.  It makes painting letters so easy!

Painting with the sharpie paint pen.

I had Gman finish painting for me.  It really is simple.  It is just like using a regular sharpie.  I would never have been able to paint the letters freehand using a paint brush.  This was easy and quick.

My version of the Christmas Trees for Sale sign. I love how my DIY sign turned out.

I am trying to decide if I want to add any trim to the border, paint a trim, or just leave it as is.  Once I am really ready to decorate for Christmas, I will had some greenery or something on the vent hood surround to break up all of the white.  Until then, I will continue with my Christmas projects!

Until Next Time,

Dining Room Christmas Tour 2015

December 22, 2015 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

I cannot believe that Christmas will be here in 4 days.  Last year we went to Italy the day after Christmas and I kind of wish we were going back this year! It was forced time that the boys had to spend with us. Besides that, it was so darn gorgeous!  This year it will be more relaxed which I will definitely enjoy.  We will have family for dinner after Christmas, so today I decided to share my Dining Room Christmas Tour for 2015.

Dining Room Christmas Tour

I am keeping it simple in here this year as well.

Christmas Scented Pinecones scattered in a basket

I added Christmas Scented pine cones to a basket and finished it off with Santa and a wreath.  Easy but festive and it smells fabulous!

Christmas Scene on an Up Cycled Ladder

Vintage Skiing Santa

Vintage Metal Christmas Figurines

I have shared these pieces before but like I mentioned in an earlier post, I use the same decorations year after year.  Although, I do add a few new favorites here and there.  I found the vintage Christmas figurines at a consignment shop for next to nothing. I am always on the look out for more pieces like these.  This year I decided to add them to my up cycled teak ladder. So even though I am using the same pieces, I am mixing it up a bit.

The 12 days of Christmas Stamped Spoons

I have shared these Stamped Spoons before but I can’t help it…Love, Love, Love them!

Aren’t they perfect?

Christmas Table Setting

Here’s a glimpse of my Christmas table setting.

So even though I kept it relatively simple in the Dining room it still feels festive! I hope you are almost ready for Santa to make his long journey!  I wish we would get some snow but I think it is supposed to be quite warm here but I am still dreaming of a white Christmas!

White Kitchen Christmas Tour

December 17, 2015 By stylishrevamp 2 Comments

Today I am sharing my White Kitchen Christmas Tour instead of a Thrift Shop Thursday.  I am running behind on my tours and wanted to get them in before Santa arrives.  A quick shout out to my Dad…Get better soon Dad, we love you tons and miss you and mom!

Now on with the Kitchen Tour…

White Kitchen dressed for Christmas with pops of red

If I haven’t mentioned it before I will do so now, I love decorating for Christmas.  I enjoy looking at all the old ornaments and decorations with all the special memories they hold and the stories they tell.  I especially love the decorations that my boys made in preschool and Elementary School.  I use these to decorate my kitchen tree.  They are so sweet. I can’t believe I am going to say this but I miss those days!

Since I love tradition, I use the same decorations year after year and add a little something new as well.

Kitchen Christmas Tree 2015

Check out the Angel on the top of the tree.  My middle son made that in preschool.  He had the most artistic teacher. It still amazes me that he is a freshman in college!  In the background, you can see my DIY Christmas Countdown sign. Since my husband wakes before the rest of the household, he is the one that changes the days.  It is such a simple thing but it is something we all enjoy. Even though it is making me a little antsy to realize Christmas is  only 8 days away.

Christmas Kitchen Santa

My kitchen Santa stands next to the glass Christmas Tree candy jar that belonged to my dad’s mom. To me it’s all about the memories and I hope this is something my boys will carry with them when they start their own family one day.

My mom bought me this feather tree a long time ago.  It’s one of those things that hold special memories for me. I added the vintage reindeer that I found at a consignment shop.  Just another thing that reminds me of Christmas from my childhood.

Vintage Tonka Truck

I start decorating with this vintage truck last year.  This was my husband’s childhood toy and I am sure it holds special memories for him.

Our Elf has reappeared everywhere but under the vent hood this year but there is still time!  Well, that is our little tour of the kitchen, tomorrow I will share my home office and the dining room.

Thanks for stopping by, I hope you enjoyed the Christmas Kitchen Tour.

Family Room Christmas Tour 2015

December 14, 2015 By stylishrevamp 2 Comments

I am really enjoying the Holiday Season this year.  My home is all decked out, my gifts are bought and my baking has begun! I love everything about the Christmas Season.

For this year’s Christmas Home Tour, I thought I would divide it into several different posts and share a room or two at a time.

So here we go, Welcome to the Family Room Christmas Tour 2015!

Family Room Christmas Tour 2015

The Family Room is where we have our main tree.   When my oldest was born, my husband was so excited to have a son,  he went out and bought a 13 foot live tree.  It was huge and all I kept thinking was, “How will I ever decorate this thing?”  I remember my husband saying, “Just this once we can have a large tree.” Well, that was 20 years ago, and some things never change.  It has become a tradition.  We always have a large live tree in the family room.  This is where we leave our cookies and milk for Santa and he leaves our gifts under this tree.

We leave cookies and milk for Santa on the hearth of the fireplace.

Family Room Christmas Tree

It took us almost 2 hours to get this tree in the tree stand properly. That is my least favorite part about having a live tree.  Some people complain about the needles dropping and the mess it can make.  None of that bothers me.  I love the smell of a Christmas tree in the home and it is worth that struggle of getting it into the stand when it’s all decorated!

Christmas 2015 Family Room

I usually keep it pretty simple in here.  The Tree is the centerpiece in this room.  I dress the mantel, the tables and I toss a few Christmas pillows on the sofas and chairs and that’s about it for this room!

I shared my Christmas card holder here on Thrift Shop Thursday. The only other thing I did to the sofa table was add some red berries rings to my candlesticks to give them a festive look.

This is the view into the kitchen from the Family Room.  I will be sharing my Christmas Kitchen tomorrow and thought I would give you a little sneak peek.  I hope you enjoyed the Family Room Christmas Tour…

Hope you have a great week.

Friday Favorites: Christmas Edition Part 2

December 11, 2015 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

Happy Friday! I am so glad the weekend is here.  The Gman and I are going to go on our annual Christmas outing.  We like to go to the local nursery and see the trains and decorations.  Then it’s off to do some of his Christmas shopping and dinner. I love to see how much thought he puts into each and every gift. My middle guy has his last final today and my oldest is home for a week before traveling back to school to take one last final. It should be a great weekend.

Now it is time to share some of my picks for Friday Favorites.  This is part 2 of my Christmas Edition.

Sharing some of my favorite Christmas finds.

Over the past couple of years, I have been filling some of my flower pots with fresh clipping to add some Christmas Cheer outside.  These will last me until late February.  This year I found some Christmas Floral Picks with large plastic ornaments. I found mine at our local Grocery Store but I have seem them at Home Depot too.  I had originally seen this idea on a Sarah Richardson’s Christmas Special several years ago.  (I am still waiting for some new Christmas shows on HGTV.)  This is my take on the outdoor planters.

Outdoor Trimmings for Christmas

Outdoor Planters prepped fro Christmas.

I love a home all decked out for the Holidays!

Earlier this week, I went to Target.  I have not been there for a while and now I remember why. I absolutely love every single thing in there!  I was trapped for hours in just one section.  The pillows, the lamps, the Christmas Decor…I had to force myself to walk away.  Well, I did pick up  one little thing…

Target Holiday salt and pepper shakers

Are these not the cutest salt and pepper shakers you have ever seen?  I am itching to go back to Target…just to look!

Every year for as long as I can remember, my youngest has asked for Reindeer for the outside.  I have always said no because, 1.)We have so many decoration and 2.) We have no space to store anything else Christmas related.

He would stare longingly at our neighbor’s Reindeer every day and mention how nice they looked.

Well, this is what we have now!

Pre-lit Reindeer from Michaels

This was on sale at Michaels.  There are so many things I like about this Reindeer.   It  folds down into one small section. It all fits inside itself.  I like the glittery gold aspect of it and I like that the head moves when it is lit up.

So Gman, sorry I made you wait almost 10 years to finally get your reindeer! XOXO

I hope you all have a fabulous weekend.

Until Next Time,

Thrift Shop Thursday #23: Christmas Finds

December 10, 2015 By stylishrevamp 2 Comments

Welcome to this weeks edition of Thrift Shop Thursday #23.  We are sharing some of our Christmas Finds from local consignment shops and our favorite store… Goodwill!

Thrift Shop Thursday #23 sharing some of our Christmas Finds

The first item up this week is a paper village set.  I picked it up because it reminded me of the village my mom always put under our Christmas tree. I think that was one of her favorite things to do, set up her village.  I would lay under that tree and stare at that village and dream for hours, it was just so pretty and seemed like the perfect town.  It was such a lovely scene.  I come from a family of seven and I am the only girl. It would not take long for one of the boys (who will not be named but we all know who he is) to drive a remote control car through the villages and rapidly try to restore it back to its original state before mom walked back into the room! Boys!  Now I have three and wouldn’t have it any other way!

Christopher Radko presents Shiny Brite Village

When I saw this paper village set by Christopher Radko it was so reminiscent of the ones from my childhood, I knew I had to have it.

Christopher Radko Shiny Brite Villages

I picked the entire set up for a few dollars at a consignment shop.  They are not vintage pieces but they do look similar to the ones my mom has under her tree.

The next piece I am sharing is one that I picked up at Goodwill for $5.  It’s one of those pieces that my husband just looks at and shakes his head.  Well, it was only $5 and I had a plan for it.

Metal Christmas Tree from Goodwill

My original plan for this baby was to hang all of my vintage ornaments on it.  That didn’t work.  The metal branches are too close together to hang the ornaments on.  I still like it and think it looks fabulous as is…it is still not a favorite for my hubby.  I am thinking Santa can put a few small presents under it and we are good to go!

My last find for today is another Christmas Tree. This one is a Christmas Tree card holder. I picked it up from Goodwill last summer.  We love displaying the Christmas cards we receive each year. We used to tape them on the door in the kitchen, then I made a ribbon to attach them to one year but this tree is my favorite for displaying the cards.

Christmas Tree card display

It is perfect.  Everyone can see the cards and it is easy to pull the cards out and read them at any time.

That wraps up this weeks Thrift Shop Thursday #23: Christmas Finds. I hope you are enjoying this Holiday Season as much as I am.

Until Next Time,

DIY Gold Glitter Believe Sign

December 8, 2015 By stylishrevamp 1 Comment

Today I decided to skip the gym and head out to do some Christmas shopping.  That was a workout within itself!  It is so nice to come home to a decorated home.  I really like our home but I especially like it at Christmas time.  I would like to have twinkling lights up all year round.

I mentioned last week that I was going to share my DIY Gold Glitter Believe Sign. This was another quick, easy and inexpensive project.  The longest part was waiting for the paint to dry.

DIY Gold Glitter Believe Sign

Supplies Needed:

Scrap wood

Vinyl Lettering  (I made mine with my Cricut Cutter)

White Paint

Gold Glitter Paint

I had some scrap wood in the garage and the paint was also something I had on hand.  The first thing you need to do is put your base coat of paint on your piece of wood.  I chose white as my base color.  I let that dry overnight.

I used my Cricut Cutter to make the vinyl letters. (Mine was a gift from Santa) If you do not have a craft cutter you can use vinyl stickers from Michaels Craft Store.  I used stickers on my Christmas Countdown Sign and My Family Birthday Calendar and they worked perfectly.

So once your base coat is dry, place you lettering on the sign. I then sprayed several light coats of the gold glitter paint over the entire sign.  I let the gold paint dry but not completely.  I then pulled the vinyl lettering off to reveal the white lettering underneath.

DIY Gold Glitter DIY Sign

I added my Believe Sign to my Ikea Billy Bookcase in my office for a little Christmas bling.

Next week I am planning on sharing my Christmas Home Tour but for now, I am off to hide some presents before the Gman gets home from school.

Gift Wrapping Ideas for Christmas

December 7, 2015 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

Now that the majority of my Christmas decorating is complete, I have time to start wrapping some of my gifts. Each year, I think I am going to wrap the same day that I buy a gift.   This NEVER HAPPENS… ever!  Instead, what I do is hide it in the closet and actually forget what I have bought and where I have hidden it.  Then I have a minor panic attack when I can’t find something.  I have always kept a journal with all the gifts I have bought with the receipts because I usually Christmas shop all year round.  I like picking up things when we travel if I see something unique.

I  actually like to wrap gifts, especially when I am not feeling stressed for time.  I like coming up with ideas and different ways to make my wrapped packages special.

Christmas Wrapping Ideas

This year I am using items that I have found at consignment shops, The Dollar General Store, PotteryBarn, and T.J. Maxx.

Vintage Pins and Brooches from a consignment shop.

I was at a consignment/antique shop a few years ago when I spotted these vintage pins and brooches.  They were in a baskets dumped in a ziploc baggie.  The basket had a mix of things like jewelry, buttons, and other odds and ends.  I found this bag full of Christmas pins and I thought they were so cute.  My mom used to buy me Christmas pins when I was little to wear on my coat. Maybe that’s why I like them so much.  Instead of wearing them though, I decided to incorporate them into my gift wrapping.

Vintage Holiday PinBrooch

Last year once the Holiday was over, I was shopping in PotteryBarn and spotted these glittery initials on clearance.  I thought they would look nice on a package rather than using a gift tag. This year, I found some glittery letters at Jo-Anne Fabric as well.

Glittery letters from PotteryBarn used as gift tags.

The Dollar Store and the Dollar General Store both have a lot of things to use for making your gift wrapping unique and special. I found this reindeer at The Dollar General Store.  It came in packs of two.

Glittery Reindeer from Dollar General Store.

They have both gold and red reindeer.  I also like to pick up all my Holiday tissue paper, tape, boxes and gift card boxes at the Dollar Store.

The last idea I am sharing is this adorable gift bag from TJ Maxx.

Giant Gift bag from TJ Maxx

This gift bag is awesome.  It’s made of thick red canvas with a soft white faux fur trim and white lettering.  It is thick and sturdy not to mention so darn cute! I am filling this up then shipping it out soon!

I hope you have enjoyed my Gift Wrapping Ideas for Christmas!  Have a good week!

Until Next Time,
