2016 Outdoor Home Tour

June 25, 2016 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

I thought since we have had some great weather recently, I would share a quick outdoor tour of our home.  The Spring weather earlier this year has really helped my yard and plants. I will admit outdoor work is not really my thing but I have gotten into it a bit more this year.

Outdoor Home Tour 2016

I think my favorite part of our yard is all the little pathways.

Paver walkway to the front door (Paver walkway to the front door)

Landscaping the pool area

This one is a bit more difficult to see, but it is a flagstone walkway meandering through the pool area to the side of the house.  This is my favorite spot. I like that the path is surrounded by a stacked stone wall, Vinca, skip laurels, Japanese Maple Tree, and the yellow climbing roses.

Back Patio Area

(Paver walkway and patio leading to the back of the house)

Our back patio is enclosed with a stone wall and  has a step down area with an outdoor fireplace. It feels like an outdoor room. This photo is not recent but I love how the fireplace looks all decorated. At the moment, I have a crew outside replacing some damaged wood pieces on our deck and trim.  I will share an updated photo in a later post.

Decorating and outdoor fireplace with fresh clipping in a planter and a fresh cut wreath.

I remember many years ago my parents were here and we built a big fire in the fireplace. My mom was a bit panicked but laughing so hard because I built that big fire using junk that my husband had in the garage that should have been trashed many years beforehand. (Mainly it was scrap wood and boxes.)  Anyway, he never missed any of that stuff I cleaned out of the garage.  It will be interesting to see if he reads this post! Yikes!

My potted herb garden, it’s small but it works for me.

Concrete pots on the front porch

This is one of my concrete pots that I shared here on  Thrift Shop Thursday. I have two of them and they flank the front entrance on our porch.  I bought the plants at Kmart. $11 that’s it and they are doing great.  I saw the same thing at a local nursery for $36.

Landscaping around the pool and pergola

Our pergola..my husband came up with this idea.  Did we need it? No, but we love it! Even though it is completely open, it feels like a room out by the pool.  The plants are finally starting to fill in nicely.  Love, Love, love it!

Yellow Climbing Roses on the pergola

Our yellow roses are finally starting to make their way up the pergola and down the fence line.  I am really liking the pops of yellow in our yard.

I hope you enjoyed this little glimpse into our outdoor living space.  It is always a work in progress but I finally feel like it is coming together.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of my WV readers, be safe!

Using Paint to Update Your Space

May 3, 2016 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

It’s no secret that I have a small obsession with spray paint.  So today I am sharing how I was able to update a little space in my sunroom using one of my new favorite paints that I shared here.

I have had these bookcases for many years.  They are made from reclaimed barn wood and I have shared them before. They are still in my sunroom but since we updated the sunroom with new furniture and changed up the colors in the room the accessories in the book case were the last thing to be updated.

I really didn’t want to go out and buy all new accessories for my bookcases but I wanted to lighten them up, they were dark maroon, mustard yellow and green. It’s funny how your taste changes over the years.

Updating accessories with Paint

I painted the large vase and even the small photo frame using Rust-oleum Chalked Spray Paint. The stain on the barn wood is pretty dark and I wanted all of the accessories to be white, cream or grey.

Using Rustoleum Chalked Spray Paint

This pot was mustard yellow.  It’s a great piece and was easily updated with paint.

Using neutrals accessories to lighten up a dark bookcase

I always felt like the corners in the sunroom were a bit dark, but now I am loving it with this simple change.

Reclaimed Wood Bookcases Styled

I think I might lighten the bookcases next…by removing some of the dark wax.  They were like that when I bought them many moons ago. They are looking a bit too dark for me now in the lighter room.

Another thing I would like to change, even though I am not ready to mention this to the hubs just yet is the wall color.  I know exactly what he is going to say, “It’s not even a year old!” And he would be correct but it just looks muddy to me now. I want it to be a more crisp beige/grey. I can paint furniture all day long but the one thing I cannot do and will no longer even attempt, is painting a wall.  I don’t know what happens but I cannot do it…at all!  Anyway, that’s another conversation for different day!

Remember when I shared my DIY Photo Clipboard? Well, I made another one and stained it a weathered grey.

DIY Photo Clipboard

I am sure my boys love that I am sharing this picture all over the place.  It’s and oldie but a goodie!  Look at all that hair!  Gosh I miss those days! #cuties!!!  It’s an old Christmas card that has been propped up in the bookcase and I had leftover wood and decided to make another DIY photo clipboard.

Updating this space with paint was so easy and I think it made a huge impact on the room.

Until Next Time,

Thrift Shop Thursday #26

April 15, 2016 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

Welcome to Thrift Shop Thursday #26.  Yes, I know today is Friday but I have been running behind all week! Not to mention the fact that I have not posted a Thrift Shop Thursday in several weeks, YIKES! Going to the gym every day is making me lazy!

This weeks treasures come from a few of my favorite places…Goodwill, plus a local consignment shop, HomeGoods and T.J. Maxx.  All of my favorite stops after the gym.

So let’s get started with Thrift Shop Thursday #26

Thrift Shop Thursday #26

My first find comes from Goodwill.  I like finding random little bits of basically nothing!  I will pick something up that cost mere pennies and think to myself I can use this somewhere for something! That’s why this blue base came home with me. It  kind of scares me because I have watched a few episodes of Hoarders.  So I guess I am glad that I do have a bit of OCD because that helps me keep everything neat, clean and organized!

Blue ceramic candle holder from Goodwill

When we revamped the sunroom, the bookcases needed an update as well.  (I will share more on that in a later post.)  I am not even sure what the blue little bowl was used for but it works perfectly as a candle holder.

White Vase and Cream bowl/candle holder

I picked the white vase up at our local consignment shop.  It’s a Kaiser W Germany pottery piece. I thought it was a sweet little vase.  I have seen several different variations of this piece on ebay and I definitely did not pay the same price at the thrift shop.  That is why I love consignment shopping so much.  I love finding great pieces at great prices.  I also picked up the white bowl at Goodwill at the same time I picked up the blue bowl, knowing that I was going to use it for a candle holder as well…just more of my little bits of nothing from GoodWill.

HomeGoods find

I found this vase at HomeGoods.  I thought it was really different than anything I have and it looks great in the bookcase in the sunroom too.  The Gman said it looks like Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean.  Yep, I still like it even after that little comment from the 12 year old!

Black and Gold Acrylic Initial from Goodwill

This was another GoodWill find! I have seen these letters at HomeGoods and T.J. Maxx but they never have the black and gold “K”.  As soon as I saw it, I scooped it up but made a promise to myself that this was the very last letter I will put in our home…ever… or until I find another one that I really, really like!  I wanted the black and gold one for my office.  It’s on my Billy Bookcase and I love it!

styling my IKEA Billy Bookcase

Looking at this picture, I can see a lot of my Thrift Shop finds are used to style my  Bookcase.

Lastly, I am sharing a clearance item from T.J. Maxx.

Potted Faux Plant

I think this is adorable!  Usually, I am not one for faux plants but I thought if Joanna Gaines uses them in her design than it’s good enough for me!  I struggle with keeping plants alive although not to brag or anything (HAHA) but I still have two Poinsettias that are thriving.   Well, actually my husband has kept them alive! I don’t have the patience for it!  They are now turning green so I am curious to see how long he can keep them alive.  I know what you’re thinking and no it does not look “Chirstmassy” especially now that they are turning green.  Maybe I will share it next week because I just bought a silver ice bucket at GoodWill to keep the 2nd plant in instead of my snowman pot. HAHA.  I told you going to the gym is making me a bit lazy.  Although we did get snow last week so technically the snowman pot did not look that out of place!

Thanks for stopping by Thrift Shop Thursday edition #26.  Have a great weekend.  I for one am so glad it is Friday!

Until Next Time,

DIY Typography Project

March 14, 2016 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

I recently finished my corner cabinet that I found at the consignment shop. I will share more on that later in the week.  I was in the middle of styling it when I came up with this easy little DIY typography project.

DIY Initial/typography Art

If you have been following me for a while,  you know that I am a huge fan of The Fixer Upper on HGTV.  I love when Joanna adds typography to her design.  In one episode she added a large number 7, representing the number of children the couple have.  In other episodes she adds a large initial of the family somewhere in her design. This past week it was the letter B.

I decided to make my design, on a smaller scale.  I had all the material on hand, so this was a quick project.

raw wood initial and brass number

DIY Typography Project

I bought the letter K from Michaels. It was left over from a previous project. The brass house number I picked up a few years ago in Maine when we were on vacation.  I bought a glass jar full of different size letters and numbers from this shop we stumbled upon. The shop was a huge red barn that had so many things, they were spilling out into the parking lot and around the sides of the building.  Good times!

You can see how I used some of the other numbers at the Island House here. I just love this idea.  Check it out!

O.K. back to my DIY Topography Project…super simple.  The brass number has some metal prongs on the back,  I pushed it into the wood to leave an indent so I would know where to drill the small holes into the wooden letter.  Next, I brushed on some stain leftover from my Home sign. While that was drying, I cleaned up my brass number a bit.  Once everything was dry, I inserted the 5 into the K and that was it.  I was finished!  This little piece represents my family.

DIY Initial/typography Art

I hope you enjoyed this little DIY project.

Until Next Time,

Thrift Shop Thursday #25: Goodwill and Consignment Shop Finds

March 3, 2016 By stylishrevamp 1 Comment

Hi everyone and welcome to this week’s edition of Thrift Shop Thursday #25: Goodwill and Consignment Shop Finds.  I have missed several weeks of Thrift Shop Thursday, not because I haven’t been thrift shopping either! Some of my finds I am going to be doing some revamping on and others I will get to later.

One of my favorite new pieces that I shared here is awaiting a good sanding and paint job.  I am hoping to get to it next week.  I  saw on the local news that we are supposed to get 1-3 inches of snow overnight but by next week it may hit the 70 degree mark. I am so ready to start painting and I am anxious to try out my new Home Right Sprayer. I will let you know my thoughts on that soon.

This week I am sharing a few smaller items. First up is this cute little ceramic egg separator. It’s practical and I liked that it is white ceramic.

What I am Loving at the Consignment Shop

February 29, 2016 By stylishrevamp 3 Comments

Last Thursday I stopped at a consignment shop that moved into our area a few months ago.  I am kicking myself for not stopping by sooner.  It is only two streets over from the gym.  Two streets and two seconds away!  I have been driving by it 5 days a week for months and didn’t realize it was there! Now that I know it is there, it could be trouble!

I have consigned with this shop before when it was in it’s previous location.  However, the new space is huge and the inventory is amazing.  So today I am going to show you what I am loving at the Consignment Shop.

The Blizzard of 2016

January 27, 2016 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

Today I wanted to share a few pictures from the big Blizzard of 2016.  It truly was amazing to see that much snow fall.   There is something so pretty and peaceful when the snow is falling and everything seems to stand still for just a little while.  I know some people don’t like being trapped in the house during big storms like this but I love it.  As long as my kitchen is stocked and we have electricity, I am good!  I think I like the fact that everyone (or almost everyone) is home and no one is rushing off to be somewhere.  I also like the unexpected break from school for the kids! I actually love when we get the phone call that school is canceled! It’s a nice little break from the routine of normal life!

The first three pictures I am sharing were taken during some of the heaviest snowfall.  You can see how reduced visibility was during the worst part of the storm.

Blizzard of 2016 during high winds and heavy pounding snow.

Jonas 2016 Blizzard

After being in the house for a few days, we decided to venture out and do some sightseeing in the area. Actually, I just wanted to see some barns in the snow.  I am a bit obsessed with The Fixer Upper and now I love all things farm like.

Sharing Some Red Barn Love

I mean, really, wouldn’t it be great to look out your back door and see this?  There is something about a red barn in the white snow…love!

I hope you enjoyed this little peek into our snowed in little world!

I will be back tomorrow with another edition of Thrift Shop Thursday!

Until Next Time…

Thrift Shop Thursday #19

October 8, 2015 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

I have missed the past two weeks of Thrift Shop Thursday.  I really thought that since the gym was near both of my favorite thrift shopping spots, it would be a breeze to pop in, see if I could score any new finds, then head home…quick and easy!  Well, that is not happening.  One, when I leave my class at the gym, I am either dying or just look like I am dying or two, I skip class all together then don’t go thrift shopping for fear someone from the gym will see me!  Anyway, today I hit the gym and the shops and found something to share and yes, I did look like a mess!

Thrift Shop Thursday #19, Sharing all my favorite thrifty finds.

I love the large candle holder that I found at the consignment shop.  When I saw it, it reminded me of the one Joanna Gaines found at an auction on The Fixer Upper, one of my favorite shows on HGTV.

This is what it looked like when I found it today.

Iron floor candle holder

Since I was planning on using it in my office,  I was back and forth between spraying it black or gold. The gold won out!

Thrift Shop Candle Holder Sprayed Gold

This is a nice and heavy piece.  I am glad I chose the gold.  It gives it a nice pop.  Check out Charlie in the background…so bored with this whole blog thing!

Gold Sprayed Iron Candle HolderYep, I am still loving my office space!

The next piece I am sharing, I found several months ago.  I get stuck on something and pick up several different variations. I am back to the candleholders.

GoodWill Gold Metal Candle Holder

This one is just a teeny tiny one that I picked up a Goodwill.  I will just add it to the collection of gold candleholders in my office.  Seriously, this is the last gold item and the very last candleholder that I will share…for now!

I just love this little candleholder though, I think it is so sweet!

Gold Metal Floral Candle Holder

Last up on this week’s Thrift Shop Thursday #19 is an old one that I have shared before but wanted to share again before I repaint it.

Cloche with Pedestal Base

I found the base of this cloche at a flea market.  It was originally stained wood that needed some love.  I painted it with Annie Sloan Graphite Chalk Paint.  I am thinking of repainting it and off white.  I think the graphite is just too dark for my dining room. I still need to put some more thought into it but I love this piece.  I picked up the glass top at Michaels and it fits within the base perfectly.

Well, that’s it for this week’s Thrift Shop Thursday #19.  I hope you are finding some great thrifted finds too.

Boy on the Run

April 11, 2015 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

Today I am sharing something a little different.  Even though I have several projects in the works, I thought I would share a little something about my family life.  As most of you know, I am a mom to three boys.  My oldest is a sophomore in college, my middle will be graduating high school in May and my youngest is in his final year of elementary school.  He is also known as my tech guy or Gman.  He is the one that handles all things computer related on this blog.  It was his idea that we start this little adventure together and so far we have been having the best time (when he is not being a tough boss).  We have even dragged my guy (aka my husband) into this adventure with us.  Sometimes I imagine a project and he is the one that has to build it for me. I have to say he has been a good sport about it and I think he really enjoys doing my building projects for me (even if he won’t admit it).

O.K. back to my youngest…every year his school does a fundraiser which involves running/walking a 5K.  Totally not my thing.  Now Pilates, that is something I do and enjoy.  Running not so much.  Anyway, we have been doing this 5K for a long time, keep in mind that my oldest is a sophomore in college.  I told my youngest if he wanted to do it, we would do it with him. It is his last year at the Elementary School.  So this morning, we had to drag ourselves out of bed to participate in the 5K.

I told him from the start, I was going to walk and so was his dad.  Then when we get there, he is looking at the starting line, the music is pumping and he asked, “can we run in the beginning?” I was looking around for one of his buddies that he could take off running with, no such luck.

Once the race started, my husband and I took off at a slow, slow pace…a nice and easy jog that turned into a leisurely stroll.  The little guy just took off.  He ran, jogged, walked and tied his shoes twice for a 2nd place finish in his age/gender group!

5k 2nd place runner

My guy and I came in dead last!  I am not joking when I say this.   My guy was a true man and let me cross the finish line before him, so technically, he was dead last!

Celebrating 2nd place finish

Congrats Gman!

Creating a Home Office Space

March 19, 2015 By stylishrevamp Leave a Comment

SRLogo

Home Office Creativiy

We are in the planning stages of creating a home office space.  I had originally planned on making an office space in the basement and I did create a desk space that I love which you can see here.  BUT it is in the basement and I am just going to say it…that basement scares me to the point that I will not go down there unless someone else is with me.  If I am forced to go downstairs by myself,  I reach my hand around the corner to turn the light on before I even start down the steps.  Then I get what I need and run as fast as I can back up the stairs and shut the door. I consider it my aerobic workout for the day.  In all seriousness, it is a nice space but it is too dark for me.  The boys like to hang out with their friends and play pool and watch movies.   So for now, we will just leave it as the man cave!
